WHAT HAPPENED
Nejat Baydar has been focusing on the colour black for seven years, ever since he studied at the Academy of Arts in Munich and graduated from in 2004. It is Nejat Baydar's first exhibition in Munich after returning from Berlin.
The clock is ticking for Johannes Hartmann's works: he is interested in the process of transformation, using iconic images from art history, re-shaping them into three-dimensional figures made of unpreserved natural materials, such as unburnt clay. In this case he chose "Tired of Life" by Ferdinand Hodler. Johannes Hartmann's works will naturally be under a constant change process as they dry and start to crumble.
In view of the black works and paint-covered photographies by Nejat Baydar one stops spontaneously in order to try to realize what happened. Similarly to the effect which the viewer experiences with Johannes Hartmann's work: we stop, we try to grasp its temporary existence, by watching it trying to keep it from its decay.
In accordance with Jean Francois Lyotard's approach, it's not about consuming Baydar's and Hartmann's works, but about taking away a moment, a sensation, a glimpse of the sublime.
