Clea Stracke and Verena Seibt see their artistic work as working with locations: research into real (urban, social, architectonic or institutional) spaces, thus making their hidden truths appear. They are interested in the breakpoints of reality, those points at which a subtle change in the world actually sharpens our view upon this world.
Thus, they show facets of a location which normally go unnoticed, e.g. if they transform some wringing machines at an old Laundromat into a monument of women's liberation (Because I want it, 2008).
Another example was their filling of a central ventilation unit of an old furniture warehouse with the noises of plates and silverware, clinking of glasses and the chatter and murmurs of an unseen celebration that tells of a past life that has disappeared (The Factory, 2006). The stories that are unfurled they don't have to invent; they just find them.
They discover places: in a literal sense they bring forth something that in these places, until then, had been buried and concealed. It is an archaeological work, bringing to light that which was trapped and covered over. However, rather than surgically and scientifically dissecting that which is found, the things are left just slightly out of focus; secretive nature is left intact and encourages the imagination. Seibt's and Stracke's aesthetic principles have loose ends hanging, like bait, out of the fictitious world into the real; these are trip-wires and traps which incite a second glance at the everyday and the societal apparatus.
